Everyone should be recognized for the hard work they put into each day of the week. With the start of the new year, positivity and recognition is continuing to be shown at Bradie Shrum Elementary School.
Assistant Principal Bob Setser had an idea to ¨bring communities in¨ while sharing the idea of positivity. Each week, two students are chosen from each grade and are given the Star Student of the Week Award. This award recognizes students from grades K-5 who stand out each week by showing positivity in the classrooms, working hard, showing excellent teamwork skills and respect for others and the school.
The elementary school is a place of enthusiasm and recognition for many students who might not get that anywhere else. Setser talked about how the students' reactions are so cheerful. ¨They ask ´Why did I get this?’ And we´re just like, ´You go above and beyond´ and they were just very excited to get that,” he said. “It was a surprise to all of them.”
In the past, Bradie Shrum had the Golden Paw Award. This award was very similar, but with a shifting of principals over the years, it changed. Setser had The Star Student Award while teaching at the middle school and wanted to start it again. He said, ¨Anything we can do to put our name out there, the better off we´ll be.¨
When involving the community, the elementary and Arby's came together. Arby's sponsors kindergarten through second grade. Each student gets a certificate and a free kid’s meal. ¨We are still working on a sponsor for grades three, four, and five,¨ explained Setser.
Arby's displays pictures of the students over the weeks on their bulletin board at their business and you can find students on the BSE Facebook page as well. Kindness, hard work and cooperation is always recognized. ¨It's a positive thing, and I want it to be very positive for the students,¨ said Setser.
